NZ Uphill

January 20, 2009 at 4:57 pm In Life, 5 Comments

My major new year resolution came to me a little late this year. Well to be honest, I made it on New Years Eve, but kept it under my hat for a bit, just to make really damn sure I wasn’t just drunk and it is something I might like to do.

To show that the recession is less of an uphill battle than people think, I’m doing my bit by riding NZ uphill on a bike. A push bike that is. And on the way I am going to do many detours to meet some interesting people and places, and I will be sharing the whole experience through yet another blog called nzuphill.8degrees.co.nz, where you will get good lengthy posts about my prep and journeys, plus I will be updating the world via Twitter, and any other damn social media channel I can find. Also by starting at the bottom it is more of a challenge (cause it is uphill you know ;) ).

Really it is to get myself in better condition, and to do something interesting with my life. Here is my first post on why the hell I am doing it, over on nzuphill.8degrees.co.nz. Have a read or visit http://nzuphill.8degrees.co.nz anytime for updates. If you can share any tips or advice, then do get in touch via email or @rowsell on Twitter.

  1. Good one, and good luck.

As a friend of mine once said – just get on the bike and start pedalling.

She managed to go 1.5 times around the world, and that was back before 1997.

  2. Awesome. I think getting on a bike and making it past the first hill will be a major feat for me, all the more reason to do it. Adrenalin junkie friends tell me once I get going I won’t be able to stop. Here’s hoping they are right!

  3. I did a ride for charity in the States (DC AIDS Ride 4) 10 years ago now. 350 miles in four days. With the training I did for it, I figured I rode around 1500 miles that year. I was the most fit I’d ever been!

Man, I’d love to say I’d do this with you, but I don’t think my knees are up to it. This is really exciting and something I know you won’t regret!

  4. Good for you Vaughan. I had a crazy teacher in Form 3 who went on a trip around the world on a beat-up old bike. You are both cleverer and cooler than him, and will no doubt have a better bike, so you trip will be well worth following.

  5. Thanks Daniel. Well I don’t have a bike yet so we will see about that :) All I have so far is the handlebars (bad joke).
I will swing by when I make it to Wellington, or is that “if”.
